UC Healthcare Exploration Program

In the summer of 2022 I participated in the University of Cincinnati Healthcare Exploration Program. For this program I was required to work 36 hours a week at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. I was given the title of Healthcare Explorer and was given responsibilities similar to that of a Patient Care Assistant. The program was started with the intention of combating the shortage of healthcare workers while providing undergraduate pre-health students with clinical experience. For every shift I was assigned a group of patients that I would monitor. That includes monitoring their vitals at assigned periods of time, taking their blood sugars before meals and before bed, assisting them in their rehab, and cleaning them as needed. Sometimes we were required to sit and watch at-risk patients for an entire shift. I worked three shifts a week and each of them was 12 hours. Through this experience I learned to use a vast array of medical equipment and a lot of medical and hospital protocol and rules. I was exposed to a variety of people with different backgrounds, beliefs, and upbringings and through experience was taught the proper ways to approach different people in different situations, especially when they are in distress or are in recovery. Because of this experience I was able to solidify my belief that the Medical field was meant for me.
